If you were to walk into a room and see a game of Yinsh mid-match, you might think you’re looking at a forgotten ancient relic or a futuristic version of Chess. There’s a certain “je-ne-sais-quoi” to the board: a hexagonal grid of lines populated by sleek rings and double-sided markers. This game is more than just a logic puzzle; it’s a living, breathing tug-of-war.
You move a ring, leave a marker behind, and flip any markers you jump over (think Othello on steroids).
In most strategy games, when you’re winning, you get stronger. In Yinsh, the opposite happens. To score a point, you must complete a row of five markers of your color. When you do, you remove those markers, but you also have to remove one of your own rings from the board.
Every time you get closer to winning, you become less mobile and have fewer tools to control the board. This naturally keeps the game tight. It prevents "runaway leaders" and ensures that the player who is trailing always has a fighting chance to a comeback until the final move.

Yinsh: Elegantni ples prstanov
Če bi vstopili v sobo in sredi tekme videli igro Yinsh, bi morda pomislili, da gledate pozabljeno starodavno relikvijo ali futuristično različico šaha. Igralna plošča ima določen »je-ne-sais-quoi«: šesterokotno mrežo črt, ki jo naseljujejo elegantni obroči in dvostranski markerji. Ta igra je več kot le logična uganka; je živo, dihajoče vlečenje vrvi.
Premakneš obroč, pustiš marker za seboj in obrneš vse markerje, čez katere preskočiš (pomisli na Othella na steroidih).
V večini strateških iger, ko zmaguješ, postaneš močnejši. V Yinsh se zgodi ravno nasprotno. Če želiš doseči točko, moraš dokončati vrsto s petimi markerji svoje barve. Ko to storiš, odstraniš te markerje, hkrati pa moraš odstraniti tudi enega od svojih obročev z igralne plošče.
Vsakič, ko se približate zmagi, postanete manj mobilni in imate manj orodij za nadzor nad ploščo. To seveda ohranja igro tesno. Preprečuje "pobegnjene vodje" in zagotavlja, da ima igralec, ki zaostaja, vedno možnost za vrnitev v igro do zadnje poteze.
