ClutronWelcome to the tutorial for *Buywords*, a word game about buying letters and selling words. The goal is to have the most money at the end of the game.
Let's get to the table and I will show you how to play.1marketletter_6001
ClutronThe first thing we will look at is our play area. Scroll down a bit so you can see everything.
Right here you can see we have two wild tiles with a single dot on them. You can use these as any letter in the words you will create. But you can only use one per word, and once they are used they are discarded.2wildletter_2_111000wildletter_1_110 1 wildletter_2_111 1
ClutronNext we have the letter tile list. This list shows you how many of each letter there are in the game, as well as how many dots are on each letter. More on those dots in a moment.3letters000letters 1
ClutronAnd last in our play area is the price list. In this game the value of letters you buy and words you sell are based on the square of the total number of dots. So if you look at the price list, a word with a total of 5 dots will sell for 25 points. Same goes for buying.
To buy a set of letters with a total of 7 dots, it would cost you 49 points.4price000price 1
ClutronThis dynamic of having to buy and sell with your points means that you want to buy letters cheap, while building and selling words with the most dots so that you recoup loses, and make a profit.
Let's scroll back up and get to playing.5price000
ClutronOver here is our player display which tells us our current score (we start with 200 so we have money to spend), where we are in the turn order (2nd), and what our letters are.
In this game the letters we have are open information, but you can toggle that setting at game creation.6player_board_88393020000player_name_88393020 1
ClutronNow for our turn. At the start of each round a die is rolled and 2 to 5 tiles will be drawn for each player based on that single die roll. Here a 5 was rolled so each player gets the chance to purchase a set of 5 tiles. Like before, the cost to purchase these letters is equal to the square of the total number of dots. Here we have 9 dots total, for a total cost of *81 points*.7marketletter_54000
ClutronThat price is pretty high, nearly half our money. But there are some good letters in that bunch, so let's buy them!
Alternatively, if you don't want the letters you can discard them from the game.
Buying them is simple, just click on the *Buy for 81* button at the top.8marketletter_6010page-title 1
ClutronYou will see our purchased letters moved to our personal play area over here.
Now it's time to create and sell a word to make some money! But only if we want to, it's not required to sell a word every turn.
*LAZIER* would be a good word, using a wild in place of the I. This would give us a word with 10 dots, worth 100 points.1myletter_4_78623274ff5d89400
ClutronGo ahead and spell out in order the word *LAZIER* with the highlighted wild for the I. Then click the *sell* button at the top to sell the word.2myletter_4_78623274ff5d89410wildletter_2_111 2
ClutronAwesome, we made 100 points, putting us a little higher than the 200 points we started with.3player_board_8839302062332ae0deb7300
ClutronOn a turn, if you have the letters you can keep creating words and selling them. However, since we have only our one wild tile left we can't do that and so will have to *pass*.
Alternatively, if you didn't want to sell a word you would just click the *pass* button without playing any letters.
For us though, we will just advance the tutorial.4passsell62332ae0deb7300
ClutronAnd that's it. Each round you will draw more tiles, decide if you want to buy them or not, and then decide it you want to create words to sell. At the end of the game the player with the most points is the winner.1marketletter_4462332ae44ab8501
ClutronTwo final things I will mention before we go.
First, you will notice at the top it mentions how many letter tiles are left. This is important because when a round occurs where there isn't enough tiles to draw for everyone, the buy letters phase is skipped and you get one final chance to sell words before the game ends.2pagemaintitletext62332ae44ab8500
ClutronSecond, there are six sides to the die rolled at the start of each round, and four of those sides are numbers with the last two being *player's choice*. When the choice side is rolled, the player leading the round gets to pick how many tiles are drawn, from 2 to 5. This is powerful at the end of the game because you could extend or shorten the game depending on your choice.3dice162332ae44ab8500
ClutronAnd that's all of the rules!
Thanks for going through this tutorial with me, if you have any questions you can refer to the rules link on the BGA page for this game.
Have fun playing *Buywords*!4marketletter_4462332ae44ab8501
