Welcome to the tutorial for one of the quilt-iest 2 player games on BGA!
*Can you make a quilt out of polyomino shapes?*
To create a beautiful quilt, however, requires effort and time, but the available patches just do not want to fit together.
So choose your patches carefully and keep a healthy supply of buttons to not only finish your quilt, but to make it better and more beautiful than your opponent‘s. :)1maintitlebar_content000square_ff0000_0_8 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9odHRwc19fX3NuaXBib2FyZC5pb19ySDd6Q0YuanBn/0/0 time_ff0000_counter aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9odHRwc19fX3NuaXBib2FyZC5pb19ySDd6Q0YuanBn/-852/-7
villagerLet's get right into the game by getting a tour of what is in front of you, so that you can make your first few moves.
BUT FIRST, *can you please zoom OUT your browser screen so that you can see 2 Boards on the top, like this*? This will improve your tutorial experience.

on my 1080p screen, i have it set at 90%.

villagerOne of your goals (that will help you score lots of points) is to *leave as few EMPTY SPACES as possible on your quilt.*
Your current Empties are being tracked here (right now 81). Every empty space is a negative 2 points to your final score.
Hence, stitching a nice tight beautiful quilt, by choosing the right *Patches*, is key to winning the game :)4empties_ff0000_icon000empties_ff0000_div 6
villagerAnother goal to aim for is *to be the FIRST player to complete a 7x7 quilt*, and receive the the Special Bonus Tile, worth 7 points.

See example boundary of 7x7 on your quilt. Note it doesn't have to be exactly in that position.5maintitlebar_content000square_ff0000_0_0 3 square_ff0000_1_0 3 square_ff0000_2_0 3 square_ff0000_3_0 3 square_ff0000_4_0 3 square_ff0000_5_0 3 square_ff0000_6_0 3 square_ff0000_0_1 3 square_ff0000_6_1 3 square_ff0000_0_2 3 square_ff0000_6_2 3 square_ff0000_0_3 3 square_ff0000_6_3 3 square_ff0000_0_4 3 square_ff0000_6_4 3 square_ff0000_0_5 3 square_ff0000_6_5 3 square_ff0000_0_6 3 square_ff0000_1_6 3 square_ff0000_2_6 3 square_ff0000_3_6 3 square_ff0000_4_6 3 square_ff0000_5_6 3 square_ff0000_6_6 3

*It helps mark the next THREE Patches available for your quilt.*

All available Patches are *polyomino* shapes. (like Tetris) :)
They are arranged in a circle around the board, so you can see what Patches are coming up next.6patch_15000
villagerLet's look at how to choose a Patch that fits your quilt (and your strategy).

is the first Patch on offer.
Notice the tiny label affixed on it?

If you hover over the patch, the label is explained. In this case, it represents the *COST of stitching this Patch to your quilt*:
- 2 Buttons
- 3 Time
Let's understand what they mean to the game..7patch_15000
villagerAt the start of the game, both you and your opponent start with 5 Buttons.
*Buttons are a currency in this game. You have to pay for patches using Buttons.*
Your current Buttons are tracked here.. keep an eye on them. If you don't have enough Buttons, you may have to skip your favorite Patches.8overall_player_board_85159207000player_board_inner_ff0000 6 player_name_85159207 6
villagerHave you tried stitching a Patch to a quilt? It takes *Time* to perfectly stitch it.
Heck, it takes me time to just stitch a button in real life :)
*Time is a very important resource in Patchwork.*
We'll soon see how it influences the players turns.9patch_15000
villagerCan you please take this Patch, right next to the Pawn?

As explained before, it costs 2 Buttons.. we have 5 in hand right now, so we can afford it.
*Click the patch, and then click either of the ROTATE buttons TWICE on the top of the screen*

Make the Patch look like this (upside down), and then Drag it to this very specific top-left corner on your Quilt board. And click the Green Checkmark to confirm placement.

villager[green]CONGRATULATIONS! You have reached the end of the tutorial! :) [/green]
*Just kidding.. :) * that honestly was the hardest part to master in this game.
Now you know that you can :
- ROTATE your Patch clockwise and counter-clockwise
- and also FLIP it.
*Make that Patch fit wherever you want on your quilt.*
You can also drag the patch to the quilt, and then rotate/flip it in place.
You can also use the rotate/flip buttons on the side of the quilt board.
Finally, you can always cancel your Patch selection and orientation, by clicking the Cancel button, or the Red cross.
[green]There's also a PRACTICE MODE button that you can click, just to play with the patch orientation, before you decide to spend your precious Buttons on it.[/green]1player_name_8857279161c5db2c4cb7a00
villagerRemember the Button and Time costs to get that Patch?
The Patch cost:
- 2 Buttons
- 3 Time
*2 Buttons have been deducted*.. you are now left with 3 Buttons (from the 5 Buttons you started).2buttons_ff0000_div61c5db2c4cb7a00
villagerNotice that your *Time Token* moved 3 spaces on the Time Board.4scoreboard_wrapper61c5db2c4cb7a00timemarker_0000ff 15 timemarker_ff0000 3
villagerIf it makes it any easier, think of the cost of 3 spaces moved on the Time Board, to reflect that 3 Hours have passed to carefully stitch the Patch. :)
*When both Time Counters reach the center of the spiral (which is 53 spaces away), the game has ended, and scores are compared.*5timetracker_5361c5db2c4cb7a00timemarker_0000ff 15 timetracker_53 6
villagerNotice the Buttons on the Time Board? (highlighted a few of them with arrows)
*Whenever your Time Token crosses the Button marker on the board, you EARN Buttons!*
How many you ask? Remember this patch you placed..

It shows a single Button stitched on it. This Patch will earn you 1 Button every time you cross a Button marker on the Time Board.
As your quilt grows with more Patches, *every time your Time Token crosses the Button marker on the Time Board, you will earn the total of all the buttons sewn on your Patches.*
6player_name_8857279161c5db2c4cb7a00timetracker_5 12 timetracker_11 12 timetracker_47 12 timetracker_52 12
villagerOne last important note about the Time Board.
In Patchwork,
- you do not necessarily alternate between turns.
- *The player whose time token is the furthest behind on the time board takes his turn.*
- [red]This may result in a player taking multiple turns in a row before his opponent can take one.[/red]
- *If both time tokens are on the same space, the player whose token is on top goes first.*
[green]*As your opponent is behind you, they take the next turn.*[/green]7player_name_8857279161c5db2c4cb7a00timemarker_0000ff 3
villagerYour opponent took their turn by choosing to advance their Time Token ahead of yours.
This meant moving 4 spaces ahead from the start position.. which earned them 4 Buttons.
Adding that to their starting 5 Buttons, they now have 9 Buttons.1timemarker_0000ff61c5db39be0c400timetracker_0 15 timemarker_0000ff 3 player_name_85159207 6
villagerYou have now learnt about the 2 Actions you can choose during your turn.
1) *Advance N spaces ahead of your opponents Time Token, to EARN N Buttons* (needed for spending on Patches)
OR
2) *Pick a Patch from the next 3 on offer*.. pay the Button and Time cost.. and Stitch it in any orientation you want, on your quilt.
Let's try these a few more times..2maintitlebar_content61c5db39be0c400
villagerIt's your turn again! Why?
[green]Because your Time Token is now BEHIND your opponents, on the Time Board.[/green]3timemarker_ff000061c5db39be0c400timemarker_ff0000 8 timemarker_0000ff 6
villagerNotice BGA helpfully highlights [red]which Patches you cannot afford by highlighting them in Red.[/red]4patch_2761c5db39be0c400
villager1) *Select this patch* (Button cost 3, Time cost 2, Button Income 1)

2) *Stitch it* below your previous patch on your quilt like this:
5player_name_8857279161c5db39be0c410
villagerThe BGA game log (on the right) is really useful to follow along moves..
Notice a bunch of things happened:
1) You paid all your remaining 3 Buttons to buy this Patch
2) Your Time Token advanced by 2 spaces, and crossed a Button marker, on the Time Board.
3) As you have 2 Buttons on your quilt (from your 2 Patches), you automatically received a Button Income of 2 Buttons.
4) Your Time Token is also now ahead of your opponents, meaning its now their turn!
5) The Pawn moved by 2 spots, skipping over the unaffordable Patch. 3 new Patches from the circle are now available to your opponent.

villagerIf you don't want to count the number of Buttons on your quilt, or on your opponents, BGA helpfully counts it for you here.
Right now,
*2/2* means: you have 2 Buttons to spend, and will earn 2 Buttons when your Time Token crosses the next Button marker on the Time Board
*9/0* means: your opponent has 9 Buttons to spend. They currently do not have Patches on their quilt that earn them buttons2time_0000ff_div61c5db6874daf00player_board_inner_ff0000 6 buttons_0000ff_div 6
villagerYour opponent purchased and stitched an expensive 7-button Patch, which moved them [green]only 2 spaces[/green] on the Time Board.
You'll soon notice that expensive Patches either have:
- lower Time costs
- more Button income
As their Time Token moved by 2 spaces and crossed a Button marker, they too earned Button Income (from the latest Patch they stitched).1timetracker_1661c5db888655300timetracker_3 15 timemarker_0000ff 3
villager[green]As their Time Token is now ahead of yours, its your turn again![/green]
BGA is [red]showing the next 2 Patches are unaffordable.. [/red] maybe we need to Earn some Buttons this turn.
Let's advance our Time Token ahead of theirs, instead of picking/placing a Patch.
To move ahead, we need to advance 2 spaces.. and that will earn us 2 Buttons.
BGA automatically does all the math for you, and shows you a helpful button labeled :
[blue] Advance 2 spaces / get 2 Buttons. [/blue]
*Click this button*2practice61c5db888655310a 8
villagerGoing to let the game play the next few moves automatically, so you can see the flow of these simple choices every turn..1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61c5db8e8154b00
villagerNotice your opponent gets to go again, as their Time Token is on top of your Time Token.1timemarker_0000ff61c5dc01f070800timemarker_0000ff 3
villagerIt's your turn again, [green]*as your Time Token is on top of the opponents.*[/green]
On the Time Board, notice you are 2 spaces away from a Special 1x1 (or 1-square) Patch. (highlighted with arrows)
*There are 5 Special Patches waiting for the first player to land / cross over to pick them up.*
These Patches are really useful to plug in those gaps that will show up as more and more Patches get stitched into your quilt. 1maintitlebar_content61c5dcd19879300timemarker_0000ff 6 timemarker_ff0000 8 timetracker_26 12 timetracker_32 12 timetracker_38 12 timetracker_46 10 timetracker_50 12
villager1) *Select this Patch* (Button cost 4, Time cost 2)

2) *Stitch it* on your quilt like so. You'll have to :
- Rotate once
- then Flip
2player_name_8857279161c5dcd19879310
villagerYour Time Token moved by 2 spaces, and has landed on top of the Special 1x1 Patch.
BGA is prompting you to immediately place the Patch on your quilt.
(once picked up, a Special Patch must be placed.. and it is no longer available on the board for the opponent to take).1maintitlebar_content61c5dcd8814ac00timemarker_0000ff 14 timemarker_ff0000 3
villager*Add the Special Patch here*
and
*click the Confirm button / Green checkbox*2square_ff0000_3_561c5dcd8814ac10square_ff0000_4_2 16
villagerPlacing the Special Patch has two benefits:
1) You close a gap and remove the -2 penalty for that space.
2) You deny your opponent from gaining the Special Patch.
Remember the special Quilt objective? Whoever completes a 7x7 quilt, with no gaps, receives a BONUS 7 points.

Special Patches are often needed to win this Bonus.1maintitlebar_content61c5dcdd5c79b00
villagerAnd with that rule, you now know everything you need to enjoy an awesome game of Patchwork, with friendly BGA players from around the world. :)
*Quilting summary*
1) On your turn,
- pick a Patch that you can afford with your Buttons
- stitch (place) a Patch on your quilt, using any desired orientation
- move the needed Time spaces
- if you cross a Button marker, earn Button Income by counting all the Buttons on your quilt
OR
- Move your Time Token on the Time Board so that it occupies the space directly in front of your opponent’s Time Token.
- You receive 1 Button per space you moved your Time Token.
2) It's now the turn of the player who's Time Token is behind, or on top, of the opponents.2maintitlebar_content61c5dcdd5c79b00
villagerTake turns picking / stitching Patches, and moving Time Tokens, until BOTH Time Tokens reach the center of the spiral Time Board.
When that happens, [green]the game ends[/green]. BGA will auto-score based on the rules discussed, ie:
- Determine the number of Buttons you have left, adding the value of the Special 7x7 tile if available.
- From this score, subtract 2 points for each empty space of your quilt board.
- The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, the player who got to the final space of the Time Board FIRST wins.
